How to Build a Better Scratching Corner
How to place scratching posts, pads, and nearby enrichment so cats have a useful corner that also fits the room.

Put scratching where the cat already passes
A scratching corner works when it sits on a real route, not in the least-used part of the room. Many cats scratch after waking, before play, or near social areas, so place the setup where those moments naturally happen.

Offer more than one angle
Some cats prefer a tall stretch, while others use a flat or angled surface more often. Pairing a stable vertical post with a low pad gives the corner more chances to succeed. Stability matters because wobbling can make even a good surface feel untrustworthy.
Keep the area visually calm
The corner should be easy for the cat to find and easy for the room to absorb. Avoid crowding it with storage baskets, cables, or fragile decor. A small toy nearby can invite use, but the scratching surface should remain the main event.
Refresh before replacing
If a scratcher loses appeal, try changing its position before assuming it is wrong. Rotate the angle, move it closer to a resting spot, or clear the path around it. Small placement changes often matter more than adding another piece of gear.
